The pilgrims started transmitting the legend from Rome to all over Europe, despite the fact that it is not in the Legenda Aurea. Sometimes, this thing make doubt to other experts about its origins in the c.XIII.

Actually, at the c.XV there were some doubts about how to represent the Mass. There are lots of variable objects in the different Gregory's Mass representations.

Constant elements are:
  • S. Gregory standing on his knees in front of the altar at the moment of the consecration.
  • Usually, he is acompannied with cardinals, bishops and acolytes.
  • Christ suffering standing on the altar, sometimes with half body or part of it in his sarcophag.
  • It's usual tu see Christ pressing his side wound which blood falls in the chalice.
  • There are always the Arma Christi around him.
Variable elements are:
  • 2 angels and/or s.Mary and s.John, who can be holding Christ or not.
  • Comitents and/or familiars of them.
  • Purgatory souls being liberated.
  • Sometimes the scene is complicated by the aparition of saints and the Christ Passion characters busts around Christ.
The message is obvious: The bread and the wine in the transubstantiation become the body and blood of Christ; and it is not only symbolic.

The Gregor's Mass desaparition:

During the Trento Council in the XVI century, the Church tried to return to the origins and purity, so they removed and condemned all this kind of legends and superstitions which were going off the Bible and Religion. One of them was this case, which suddenly desapeared, nevertheless, isolated examples can be seen in the c.XVII out of the inertia of the legend.
